It's the metamorphosis of the most beautiful woman in the world to one of the most skilled actresses.
Provoked is Aishwarya Rai's next film after Mani Ratnam's Guru and has been directed by Jag Mundhra under the banner of Sunanda Murali Manohar's CeeiTV Productions. It is an English-language film, to be dubbed in various regional Indian and international languages; and talks about the life of an abused and battered Indian woman and how she finds her justice.
In Provoked, Aishwarya Rai plays the role of a woman of Indian origin, who lives with her husband in London. The beginning of her married life is blissful, but it turns deadly as her husband turns violent and abusive. For 10 years she bears her pain and torture, until one day, she loses control and gets her revenge...
The story then moves on to how she is imprisoned for her crime and how a supportive group of women rally around to get her justice and freedom.
Provoked was screened at the Cannes Film festival in 2006 and received great reviews from critics and regular viewers. The unanimous verdict - this could well be Aishwarya Rai's best performance in films. Aishwarya has managed to pull off every emotion from new-bride shyness to laughter to horror and pain and finally determination with aplomb, as if she were living the character, say the critics.
Apart from Aishwarya Rai, Provoked stars Miranda Richardson, Naveen Andrews, Nandita Das, Robbie Coltrane and others. This Jag Mundhra-directed film has music by A.R. Rahman - his background score and soundtrack for this film are simply superb - flowing with the moods of the movie.
