J.K. Rowling, author of the hit Harry Potter series of novels, has filed a case against RDR Publications which is poised to publish The Harry Potter Lexicon without her permission. The book is based on ardent fan Steve Vander Ark’s website. The suit seeks to stop publication of the book and requests damages for copyright, federal trademark infringement and any profits to be gained from the work.
Rowling claimed to be readying a Harry Potter Encyclopedia herself and is greatly distressed by the fact that someone is trying to benefit financially from a character that is entirely her creation. Rowling added that she had intended to give the proceeds from her Harry Potter Encyclopedia to charity and is hence even more upset at RDR’s venture to publish the book with consulting her. RDR and Vander Ark argue the 400-page book would promote sales of Rowling's work, but the author is relentless.
