The promo for the Keira Knightley starrer The Duchess sparked outrage by showing pictures of the late Princess Diana and emphasizing the link between the film's lead character Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and her modern-day descendant. Georgiana is said to be a very distant relative of the late Princess.
The trailer, which is currently being shown in cinemas, shows juxtaposed images of Keira's character and Princess Diana and reads – ‘The two were related by ancestry and united by destiny.’ Keira has come forward to defend her role and insists that her character should not be compared to the late royal. She says, "I am Georgiana. I am not Diana. The film is not about Diana."
Amanda Foreman, who wrote the biography on which the film is based, dubbed the promo as "a bad joke"; director Saul Dibb has blamed "the marketing men" for the snafu. But Saul Dibb adds, "We didn't want to make any parallels between the two women. It didn't govern the shooting of the film or the performances."
