African-American actor Brandon T. Jackson praised Robert Downey Jr. (his co-star in Tropic Thunder) for the latter's portrayal of a black man in the comedy.
Robert plays a Caucasian actor who dyes his skin dark to land a film role written for an African-American. Brandon admits he had reservations about Robert's character, Kirk Lazarus, at the start of the project, but was won over by Robert's portrayal once shooting commenced. He says, "When I first read the script, I was like, 'What? Black face?' But when I saw him Robert act, he, like, became a black man. To be honest, he played a black dude better than anybody I've seen!"
